December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.

Welcome back to the final Glyn Wilton Mixed Music Bag for 2025! I’d like to thank Glyn for hosting week after week. This year’s theme was challenging at times but we all persevered. I’m excited to find out what’s in store for us in 2026. Here is my artist and his song for New Year’s Eve, 2025. Happy New Year!

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in 1963, George Michael was of Greek Cypriot and English descent. He met his future music partner, Andrew Ridgley, at Bushey Meads School; in 1981, they formed the band Wham!, achieving massive success in the UK and US. The duo had major hits like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”and “Last Christmas” before disbanding in 1986 due to creative differences. Michael’s solo debut album, Faith (1987), sold over 25 million copies, featuring hits like “Faith”and “Father Figure”,making him a global superstar. His Grammy Awards include Album of the Year for Faith and Best R&B Performance for his duet with Aretha Franklin. Michael’s extensive catalog includes “Jesus to a Child”,“Fastlove”,and the iconic charity single “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” with Elton John.

After years of privacy, George Michael came out as gay in 1998, later addressing the subject in his song, “Outside”. He has been acknowledged for his extensive, often anonymous, charity work supporting causes like HIV/AIDS and the homeless. At age 53, George Michael passed away on Christmas Day in 2016 from liver and heart disease, leaving behind a legacy as a pop icon and influential artist.

“December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)” was commercially released on December 14, 2009. The song was originally announced during one of the last dates on Michael’s 25 Live tour, and was available for free on his official website on December  25-26, 2008. The song was written by Michael and longtime writing partner, David Austin. It had originally been written with the Spice Girls in mind; after a few failed deadlines, the song was going to be given to Michael Bublé but George Michael decided to keep it for himself. Michael performed the song live on December 13th for the final of the 2009 series of The X Factor. The day after the performance, physical copies of the song were sold out in one day, forcing Michael’s record label to print new copies. The song debuted at #14 on the UK Singles Chart.

“December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas)” is a deeply personal, nostalgic ballad about the magic of childhood Christmases and longing for simpler, more innocent times. The animated video uses vivid, child-like imagery (like TV set Christmas trees and animal friends), reflecting on the wonder of growing up and the yearning for peace, and belief in Christmas magic, making it a poignant tribute to lost innocence and George Michael’s own past.

LYRICS

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true

Sweet December song
The melody that saved me
On those less than silent nights
When snow would fall upon my bed
White sugar from Jesus
And take me to the day

She could always smile
The Virgin Child would always show, you see
Just to save me
(Just to save me)

There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that morning they’d decided
That the war would have to wait

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
So I dreamed of Christmas

Maybe since you’ve gone
I went a little crazy
God knows they can see (the child)
But the snow that falls upon my bed
That loving I needed
Falls every single day
For each and every child
The Virgin smiles for all to see
But you kept her from me

There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that morning they’d decided
That the war would have to wait

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
And so I dreamed of Christmas
Yes, I dreamed like you

Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true
