Written for Friday Fictioneers, where our host Rochelle
encourages us to be creative by writing a story in
100 words or less using the photo shown below.
Here’s where the photo prompt took me.

“Martha, must we perpetuate this pagan ritual year after year?”
(“Oh, God! No!”)
“Wonderful! This vermin-infested ersatz evergreen disgusts me!”
(“This is dreadful!”)
“Exactly! Hard to believe we’re in agreement!”
(“No! No!”)
“Yes, yes, you loon! We agreed; no tree!”
(“No! Stop!”)
“Now we’re disagreeing? Martha, have you gone insane….shouting and staring out the window?”
“Shut up, George, and call the police.”
“About a Christmas tree?”
“No, you idiot! The man in the yellow house is strangling his wife!”
“She likely insisted he hang the bloody Christmas lights!”
“CALL NOW!”
“Alright, Martha! But I know exactly how that man feels, poor bastard!”

I’m not exactly sure why, but this reminds me of a British comedy from the ’70s or ’80s. Great dialogue!

That’s a good vibe to be having. I’ve written about these two before and there are definitely Brit overtones. Thanks!

Dear Nancy,
Never a dull moment with George and Martha. 😉 Love the song. I hadn’t heard that one. It’s always entertaining at the Elephant’s Trunk. 😀

I shouldn’t laugh about such a serious matter… but it’s so much fun.
The dialogue is perfect.

Families at Christmas, it can get tense. Watch out Martha you might be next. There is a comic tone with seriousness in the story which I enjoyed.

It’s really too early for me, Jim, but seeing a tree in the corner of the photo prompt pushed me in that direction. We’ll get there soon enough!

I think George is an Alien, he doesn’t seem to be on the same planet as Martha … and a ‘snappy’ song, Nancy, but no song from me. It’s 10.00 pm and I haven’t finished my post yet!

Thank you, Ernie. I’ve written many stories about George & Martha; they are a dysfunctional couple who would rather die than live apart, even though they are so rude to each other. I should have included a link to my earlier stories; I didn’t think of it.
