Written for dVerse Poetics – It’s Not That Scary.
Mish invites us to celebrate Halloween by writing
a non-scary poem using one of the movie quotes
provided for our first line. I have chosen the line
“Help Me. Help me be human.” from The Fly (1986)
with Jeff Goldblum. Here’s my romantic poem.

“Help me. Help me be human.”
Frankenstein pleaded to the moon
As he prepared for his first date
With his future bride, his heart a-swoon.
He straightened his bolts and adjusted his tie
Nervously practicing his smile
Hoping she wouldn’t be scared away
By his electrifying style
They met at a dimly lit café
Where the candles flickered and danced
She looked at him with bedroom eyes
As they held each other’s hands
Conversation flowed like a bubbling potion
As they shared their hopes and fears
She laughed at all his awkward jokes
And wiped away his lonely tears
By the end of the night, they both knew
That they were meant to be
Frankenstein found his missing piece
In his lovely, electrifying she

As I was reading this, I thought, this is “Young Frankenstein!” Clever and sweet.
I love that scene in the movie in your clip.

Merril, I’m a huge fan of Mel Brooks and all his movies. He’s the last of the truly great comics so when I have an opportunity to feature his work, I’ll take it. That clip from “Young Frankenstein” is a classic. I’m delighted to know you enjoyed my poem. Thanks very much.

You’re welcome, and I did.
I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Mel Brookes, except for Young Frankenstein, which I love.

This one really warms me, Nancy — that opening plea, “Help me. Help me be human,” feels so vulnerable to me.

Nice poem. I always dug Ms. Frankenstein. I knew my wife, Momo, since she was 12, but didn’t ask her out on a date until she was a senior in high school. Went to see Santana. I guess I should pen a poetic tribute, but it might be much too weird.

It would be so cool to have hair like Mrs. Frankenstein! I think you should pen a poetic tribute to Santana; that wouldn’t be weird at all. 😎 😂

The monster had a driving desire for companionship, but his ghastly appearance made that difficult, however in the end love conquers all. Great story, Nancy.

I love this first date, Nancy, like being a fly on the wall, and such fun! I especially love how he ‘straightened his bolts and adjusted his tie’ and hoped ‘she wouldn’t be scared away by his electrifying style’, and ‘conversation flowed like a bubbling potion’.
