RDP Wednesday: cranny

Today at RDP, we are asked to share a story,
poem, photo, painting, essay, etc., focusing
on the word ‘cranny
. Here’s my take.

One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast or a snack is a toasted Thomas’ English Muffin. It toasts up perfectly every time and I love how the butter melts into every nook and cranny. An English muffin has so much more personality than plain toast and is great for making sandwiches, too! In case you’re wondering, Thomas’ English Muffins were created in New York City by an English immigrant named Samuel Bath Thomas in 1880. He brought a recipe from England but developed his own popular version of the product there. The name “English muffin” was coined in the United States to describe this new product, which Thomas sold in his New York bakery. I don’t care what name is on the package …. just as long as it’s Thomas’ English Muffins!

  1. You speak to my heart with Thomas’s EM. Crunchy, with flavor bubbles, just the right thickness and size for a scramble and cheese, maybe a thin-sliced tomato. To be devoured with cup of black coffee and a look out the window at the morning frost!

  2. Rather ironically, given their name, I’ve never heard of these and they aren’t sold here, as far as I can tell. From the photo their inner consistency is more like what we know as a crumpet.

        1. There’s a distinct similarity and, as I wrote in my post, Samuel Bath Thomas brought a recipe from England when he emigrated and developed his own popular version of the product in NY. Must have been a crumpet recipe! Thanks for the pic, Clive; now I need to hunt down an authentic crumpet …. for research, of course! 😂

  3. I used to work for a company in Chicago that made English muffins. They don’t anymore, and actually when I worked there they were kind of a loss leader. And no, they weren’t as good as Thomas’s, but they were available in Chicago before Thomas’s…

    I’m just babbling…
