Today at RDP, we are asked to share a story,
poem, photo, painting, essay, etc., focusing
on the word ‘opportunity’. Here’s my take.

Charlotte had been unemployed for nearly eight months and was dangerously close to being broke. The thought of having to move back in with her parents made her depressed; she knew all she’d hear from them would be “I told you so”. As she raised the window shade, she saw the custodian of the church across the street taping a sign on the church door and on a few shop windows. Curious, Charlotte quickly pulled on her sweatshirt and stepped outside to check out the sign. The church needed a new receptionist to start work ASAP. She could do that! Without a second thought, she knocked on the door; she was surprised when the priest himself answered. Charlotte told him about her desperate situation and how she could really use the job. After a few questions, the priest told her that the job was hers. Charlotte was so appreciative, she almost cried. “Thank you so much, Father Rivera. Thank you! I promise I won’t let you down!” As she left the church, Charlotte looked up to the sky and made a sign of the cross before running back to her apartment. She had to get ready for work!

I know exactly how Charlotte feels. I was a 99er unemployed during the Great Recession and then my unemployment benefits finally ran out, as whatever I did, I couldn’t find a job.

Very sorry to hear that, Jim. That has to be the most awful feeling, filled with hopelessness, helplessness, and anxiety from which some people never recover. Such a miserable situation.
