All it took was one look at Crispina’s pic #2 and I was transported to the infamous Tallahatchie Bridge from the epic song, “Ode to Billie Joe”, by Bobbie Gentry. “Ode to Billie Joe” is a 1967 narrative song telling the story of a family’s reaction to the news of Billie Joe McAlister’s suicide, which occurred when he jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge. Gentry’s song became a massive hit, known for its evocative storytelling, ambiguous ending, and subtle portrayal of the indifference of the narrator’s family to the suicide. The mystery surrounding the song’s meaning, especially what Billie Joe threw off the bridge, led to widespread speculation and cultural discussion.

    1. My great pleasure, Crispina. This is such a remarkable song, how it makes us feel like we’re eavesdropping on a very private conversation. It gets under your skin and rattles the nerves. And I love it! Thanks very much for your lovely comments!
