This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my September artist and their song.

And just like that, we are bidding farewell to September and gearing up for the final three months of 2025. Where has the year gone?
The Happenings were a 1960s American pop-rock vocal group from Paterson NJ, known for their hits “See You in September” (1966) and “I Got Rhythm” (1967). Formed as The Four Graduates in 1961, they were discovered by The Tokens, who signed them to their label. The group had a formula of taking well-known older songs and giving them their own spin. After their success in the late 60s, the band faded but continued to tour, performing at oldies shows and on cruises
“See You in September” was originally recorded by the Tempos in 1959 but became a #3 hit for The Happenings in 1966, thanks to their rich harmonies and upbeat style. This popular version was known for its Four Seasons-like sound and is the one most people remember today. The song, written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards, earned a gold disc for selling over a million copies.
The lyrics to “See You in September” convey a bittersweet farewell from a teenager to their love interest, who is leaving for the summer, with the narrator expressing hope that their relationship will endure the separation and their “summer love” won’t find someone else. The song captures the anxiety and uncertainty of a young love being tested by a summer apart, but also the promise of a reunion when the school year begins in September.

LYRICS
I’ll be alone each and every night
While you’re away, don’t forget to write
Bye-bye, so long, farewell
Bye-bye, so long
See you in September
See you when the summer’s through
Here we are (bye, baby, goodbye)
Saying goodbye at the station (bye, baby, goodbye)
Summer vacation (bye, baby, bye, baby)
Is taking you away (bye, baby, goodbye)
Have a good time, but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love?
(Counting the days ’til I’ll be with you)
(Counting the hours and the minutes, too)
Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye
(Bye-bye, so long, farewell) bye, baby, goodbye
(Bye-bye, so long) bye, baby, goodbye
Have a good time, but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love?
(I’ll be alone each and every night)
(While you’re away, don’t forget to write)
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
I’m hopin’ I’ll see you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Well, maybe I’ll see you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September…

Wonderful choice. However- I just realized I never had a summer love. I assume I am well past the opportunity- but maybe I will create one… hehehehe

Good choice Nancy. Yes, it definitely does have a Four Seasons vibe.

I know the song, but this version is new to me – I love harmony, and this is simply beautiful!

I always thought that See You in September should have been in the movie Grease as Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta ended to their perfect summer romance. Nice choice, Nancy.

It’s the perfect summer teen love song so why not? It would have fit in perfectly with Sandy and Danny!
Thanks, Jim.
