Did You Know?

Say “Cheese!”

The world’s most expensive cheese is Pule, a Serbian cheese made from the milk of Balkan donkeys …. a rare and endangered breed. Its high price reaches up to an astounding $1,300 per kilogram or $600 per pound …. just a bit more than Stop & Shop’s yellow American! Tangy and earthy, Pule has a crumbly and firm texture and a nutty, slightly salty/sweet flavor. Its distinctive taste and rarity make it a must-try for any cheese aficionado looking to explore the most decadent cheeses available.

Pule cheese is not only pricy; it is considered a delicacy due to its unique production process and the care taken in its manufacture. Donkeys in general have smaller-sized udders producing very little milk; it takes a significant amount of milk to produce even a small amount of cheese. Milking the donkeys and making the cheese is a labor-intensive process; no automated milking machines exist that are suitable for the unique characteristics of donkey udders. The process must be done by hand, with farmers needing to milk each donkey three times a day.

The cost of maintaining the Zasavica Donkey Reserve in western Serbia where the donkeys are raised also contributes to the high price of Pule.

Now that you know all about Pule cheese, would you be willing to give it a try? I would …. but I’m going to wait until it goes on sale!

  1. I’m with Willow, a nice Wesleydale, … or mature cheddar, extra mature, … gorgeous, … and not as expensive, … but if it’s ever on sale, Nancy,… and you get your hands on some you must let us know what it taste like, and whether it’s worth the price, …💙
