Hey! Welcome to Weird Al Wednesday
featuring the comedic genius of Al Yankovic.
After 6 months of wild and wacky weirdness,
it’s time to pack up the accordion and hit the road.
“Say, Al! If you could pick one word to describe
these past 6 months, what would it be?“

Not all Weird Al songs are made into videos, which is the case with our song today. However, just because there is no official video for Al’s “Addicted To Spuds” doesn’t mean a video doesn’t exist. Do you think after all this time I’d leave you with some boring static audio? Never! After hunting high and low, I finally came across this video of unknown origin of Al appearing at MTV’s Live 1987 New Year’s Eve Party. Now, I’m the first to admit the quality of this video isn’t award-winning, but it’s far from the worst I’ve ever seen. Besides, this will probably be the closest any of us will get to seeing Al perform live on stage (although he is appearing at Foxwoods on July 18th and I’m giving that some thought). “Addicted To Spuds” …. in case you haven’t figured it out yet …. is a parody of “Addicted To Love” by Robert Palmer – an artist I adore. Sadly, he passed away in 2003 at only 54 years of age. Palmer won two Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocalist: one in 1986 for “Addicted To Love” and again in 1988 for “Simply Irresistible“. He also won MTV’s Best Male Video Award in 1986 for “Addicted To Love” and was winner of Rolling Stone magazine’s 1990 readers poll for the category “Best Dressed Rock Star”. You’ll get no argument from me.

LYRICS
The lights are on, but you’re not home
Your mind is not your own
Your heart sweats, your body shakes
Another kiss is what it takes
You can’t sleep, oh, you can’t eat
There’s no doubt, you’re in deep
Your throat is tight, you can’t breathe
Another kiss is all you need
Whoa, you like to think that you’re
Immune to the stuff, oh, yeah
It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough
You know you’re gonna have to face it
You’re addicted to love
You see the signs, but you can’t read
You’re runnin’ at a different speed
Your heart beats in double time
Another kiss and you’ll be mine
A one-track mind
You can’t be saved
Oblivion is all you crave
If there’s some left for you
You don’t mind if you do
Whoa, you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh, yeah
It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough
You know you’re gonna have to face it
You’re addicted to love
Might as well face it
You’re addicted to love
Might as well face it
You’re addicted to love
Might as well face it
You’re addicted to love
Might as well face it
You’re addicted to love
Might as well face it

LYRICS
Potato skins, potato cakes
Hash browns, and instant flakes
Baked or boiled or French fried
There’s no kind you haven’t tried
You planned a trip to Idaho (whoa-ooh)
Just to watch potatoes grow
I understand how you must feel
I can’t deny they’ve got appeal
Whoa
You like them whether they are plain or they’re stuffed, oh yeah
Better face the facts, it seems you can’t get enough
You know you’re gonna have to face it
You’re addicted to spuds
Your greasy hands, your salty lips
Looks like you found the chips
Your belly aches, your teeth grind
Some tater tots would blow your mind
And you don’t mind if they’re not cooked
You need your fix, I guess you’re hooked
And late at night, you always dream
Of bacon bits and sour cream
Whoa
You like them even if they’re lumpy or tough, oh yeah
It’s pretty obvious to me you can’t get enough
You know you’re gonna have to face it
You’re addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to spuds
Ooh yeah
I’m givin’ up, it’s just no use
Another case of spud abuse
What can I say? What can I do?
Potato bug has got me too, whoa-ooh
I used to hate them, now they’re all that I eat, oh yeah
I’ve often seen then whipped, but they just can’t be beat
Now I’m gonna have to face it
I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds
Might as well face it, I’m addicted to spuds

When I started this blog in January, it was with a great deal of reluctance. What if it sucked? I honestly didn’t know what kind of reception/reaction it would get; after all, how many people are Weird Al fans these days? Well, the answer to that is millions, according to his number of online viewers (4.6 mill) and the fact that Al is actively touring and performing sold-out shows at venues around the world. This year alone he is slated to perform in 65 cities. Add to that, the amazing response I received from you; I found out very quickly that Al has plenty of fans, both old and new!
Big-time thanks to all of you, my weirdly wonderful Weird Al Weirdos, for joining me every Wednesday these past 6 months as we celebrated the weirdness of Weird Al Yankovic. I had an absolute blast preparing and presenting all these fabulous videos for you and I looked forward each week to your reactions. Judging by the things you said in your comments, you thought the 25 videos we watched together were weird, wacky and wonderful. I’m really glad I did this blog!
That’s all she wrote, kids!
See you on the flip side. 😎

I know this was the final post of your fun “Weird Al Wednesday” series. But an article in yesterday’s New York Times prompted me to leave another comment. They reported Weird Al sold out his first-ever Madison Square Garden show. He truly had his “rock-star moment, as the paper called it – incredible! 🙂

That’s incredible, Christian! I don’t have an account with NYT so I couldn’t open the link. I’ll look for some reports online. Thanks for the share. What an incredible night for Al! 🤩

When Weird Al Yankovic, the country’s foremost song parodist for the last 40 years, took the stage for his first-ever Madison Square Garden show on Saturday, his accordion got its own ovation. “Are you ready to polka?!” he shouted, and the sold-out crowd cheered as he dove into an altered medley of hits. (“Old Town Road” really shines atop an oompah beat.)
With videos and elaborate costumes, the Bigger & Weirder tour showcased his enduringly singular, lampoonery-filled pop culture stardom.
Along with his signature instrument, he played the keyboard, melodica and harmonica, and with a tight backing band — many of its members have been with him for decades — performed some of his biggest numbers: his first single, “My Bologna,” from 1979 (to the tune of the Knack’s “My Sharona”); “Like a Surgeon” (à la Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” but in scrubs); “Smells Like Nirvana,” in full Kurt Cobain grunge regalia.
At 65, Weird Al still commands the stage like a natural-born rocker, with high kicks and the panache to pull off what few other artists can (including a fat suit).
During “Eat It,” a riff on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” audience members — many in Hawaiian shirts and sporting curly locks — were on their feet. Even a seen-it-all security guard danced. For “White & Nerdy,” Weird Al arrived via scooter, to the thump of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’.” Father-son pairs, arm-in-arm, knew every lyric.
Weird Al has sold over 12 million albums and won five Grammys. His career has, surprisingly, continued to surge: He had his first No. 1 record in 2014, with “Mandatory Fun.”
Amid the jokes on Saturday, he took time to savor his achievements.
“Oftentimes really big moments in your life come and go so quickly that you can’t really enjoy them while you’re in them,” he said, and paused as the arena’s house lights rose, his latest milestone sinking in.
The tour, with a “Star Wars”-themed finale involving storm troopers and R2-D2, is Weird Al’s biggest production ever. But it’s not all pastiche: He did some original (and funny) numbers, and a cover of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” that showed off his tenor and rhythm.
His 2014 song “Word Crimes” — a parody of “Blurred Lines” that criticizes bad grammar (“I don’t want your drama / If you really wanna / Leave out that Oxford comma”) — is like an ethos: Get the words right! That’s joy.

Another fun parody by “Weird” Al. “Addicted to Spuds” is yet another one that’s new to me. I never quite realized how many parodies he did. Your series has been very enlightening, not to mention entertaining! 🙂

Thanks, Christian! I love both songs and was thrilled to find an Al video. It’s hilarious; once again, he’s so good at this parody thing. It’s been my great pleasure doing this blog. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend.

Yeah, I’m “addicted to spuds” … no car, no spuds and carrots in the cupboard (although I bus it down to the shops this afternoon) … I’m so glad you found Al’s video … and I love Robert Palmer’s song too …

I know it’s late, but I purposely kept scrolling knowing that today was Weird Al Wednesday! I loved this parody, even though it is heavy on the carbs! I love that Al is able to morph into the original singer’s vibe and execute the song perfectly. One day, I’ll get out to a show…

Sometimes you just gotta have your carbs, y’know? It’s a real talent to take on the physical and vocal mannerisms of someone else and make it look so natural.
Al’s got two stops in MI in early July. Check ’em out
Thanks for being a big part of WAW!!

🥔🥔😁 How does he manage not cracking up while singing in between two potato heads. 😂 I’d never pass up a chance to listen to the original by Palmer or watch the video. Funny parody! Thanks for sharing a laugh, DJ Nancy. 🎶

He’s really into his character and that’s all part of a great performance. Al did a terrific Palmer, who I adore and wish was still here with us. These past 6 months have been great fun for me. ♡🎶

This was so fun! I loved watching Robert Palmer and his iconic slicked back, lipsticked “band”, so good. But I really loved the video of Al! He’s hilarious, smart and witty and talented. I have not seen many of these posts, so I’m really happy I got in on the last few

It’s kinda inspiring that he made a HUGE career with his unique multi-talents. Gives ya hope! Great song to close off 6 months of fun. I know I’ll be dreaming of bacon bits and sour cream tonight! 😍💙😍

If you like them fully loaded like me, don’t forget the melted cheese!
Al loves music; always did. I’m sure he’s savvy enough to know he wouldn’t have made as great an impact if he went for a straight music career. He made a great choice. Thanks so much, Liz!
