Ekphrastic, Poem

Chiaroscuro

Written for dVerse Poetics: In Other Words.
Our host Melissa Lemay from Mom With A
Blog
asks us to dive into the world of color
and detail as we write an ekphrastic poem
inspired by the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe.
Here is the painting I selected and my poem.
In addition, the words shown in bold are the
artistic terms I chose to include in my poem.

Georgia O’Keeffe, Long Lake, Colorado; Adrienne Brugger Sketchbook (1917), watercolor and graphite on paper, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, gift of The Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation.

Abstract long lake reflects the hues of blue,
Where greens embrace the shores with tender grace.
Tall trees whisper secrets, old and true,
Their patinas dance upon the water’s face.

Purple blooms emerge from forest’s heart,
A montage that nature gently weaves.
In quiet harmony, they play their part,
With autumn winds that ruffle burnished leaves.

Inside life’s atelier where silence reigns,
The whispers of existence softly glide.
Majestic vistas soothe with neutral strains,
As sunlight kisses landscape far and wide.

  1. So beautiful. The art words fit so perfectly in place. I especially love. “Inside life’s atelier where silence reigns, / The whispers of existence softly glide.”
