STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN – Born and raised in Dallas, Stevie Ray Vaughan exploded onto the music scene of the early 80s like nothing anyone had ever seen. All of a sudden, blues music was on mainstream radio and MTV and it was all because of the rapid ascent of Vaughan, his band Double Trouble, and his astonishing debut album, Texas Flood. Stevie broke out during a time when guitar-heavy blues/rock was off the popular radar screen and the world was listening to New Wave, New Romantics, Synth Pop, and other styles that were seen as the next evolution of music. Vaughan and his undeniable virtuosity flew directly in the face of all that, wowing the world with the power of real people playing all-out without ever losing the nuances of their art. But life had other ideas, unwelcome plans. Stevie Ray Vaughan’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in 1990 at age 35 cut short a brilliant career in blues and American R&R just as he was on the brink of superstardom. Vaughan still looms large in the hearts and minds of guitarists and music fans everywhere; he is considered one of the greatest players of all time and will be an influence on aspiring musicians forever. 1982’s “Pride and Joy” was a feature of Vaughan’s live repertoire before he recorded it. According to Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton, Vaughan wrote it for a new girlfriend at the time; somewhat ironically, a later fight with her inspired his song “I’m Crying“. “Pride and Joy” overflows with the might of Vaughan’s talent and is like one of life’s perfect creations. Double Trouble both match and support him with a big-league groove that’s still quickening pulses today. Vaughan’s tone, phrasing, and presence are beyond judgment; “Pride and Joy” will always be among the first songs mentioned anywhere his name comes up.

  5. Wow, Stevie Ray Vaughan really was one of a kind—his talent just hits different! Reading this made me think about how I just had my cabinets refinished, and it’s kind of like giving them their own “Texas Flood” moment—bringing something classic back to life with a fresh touch. Good music and home upgrades, both timeless!
