U2 – With a career spanning almost five decades, U2 is one of the most influential and successful rock bands of all time. The Irish quartet has produced 15 studio albums and sold over 170 million records worldwide. The band members were attending a Dublin secondary school in 1976 when they first got together. It was 14-year-old drummer Larry Mullen Jr. who posted an announcement on the school’s notice board seeking musicians for a band. The initial group, known as ‘The Larry Mullen Band’, included Bono (vocals), The Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums). After some lineup changes, the four remaining members settled on the name ‘U2’. The band’s early records were characterized by an intense spirituality, commenting on social and political issues with compassion and tenderness. The group became renowned for its inspirational live performances and was a word-of-mouth sensation long before it made much of an impact on the pop charts. But, with the multimillion-selling success of The Joshua Tree in 1987 and #1 hits such as “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, U2 became stars. The classic rock anthem expresses the spiritual quest of the band’s lead singer, Bono. In an interview, he says, “It’s a song about searching for meaning or transcendence, and to me, the most interesting thing about it is that you don’t find it. It’s about the search.” The song was released as the second single from the The Joshua Tree. The lyrics describe Bono’s search for meaning in a world of suffering and injustice. He sings about his experiences of love, faith, doubt, and temptation, but concludes that the search continues. The song was a critical and commercial success, reaching #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the UK Singles Chart. Many critics and publications have ranked “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” among the greatest tracks in music history, including Rolling Stone which ranked the song at #93 of its 2010 list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” U2 ranks among the world’s best-selling music artists. Their accolades include 22 Grammy Awards, eight Brit Awards, four Ivor Novello Awards and two golden Globe Awards. They were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked U2 at #22 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time“. Throughout their career, as a band and as individuals, they have campaigned for human rights and social justice causes, working with organizations and coalitions around the world.

I started listening to U2 when their album was downloaded automatically onto my iPod. For years, it was my walking music. This song always brings the feels. I love that it’s a live version being recorded. To be in that crowd ♥️♥️♥️

Yes, to be in that crowd must have been incredible. There were times during certain concerts where I was ‘transported‘ to another level of awareness and consciousness (and it wasn’t just the drugs, either). It’s very difficult to explain but I know you get what I’m talking about. I felt it with Dio, Bowie and Janis …. there were others but that’s a good start! Thanks so much, Jill

I had the same reaction when I saw Dio too. Otherworldly.

I’ve liked U2 songs for a long time. I read a book, I can’t remember the name but it was a biography, or autobiography of them, but that was years ago and so much more has happened since then. The best I saw was their laser light show at our planetarium one time. Amazing! If you ever get a chance, don’t miss it. 🙂

The laser light show must be incredible! I’ve never seen U2 in person but their videos are amazing. Thanks for a great comment, Barbara. I’m pleased to know you enjoyed today’s U2 post.

I had The Joshua Tree and loved it. Sadly it got chewed in the car and I never got round to replacing it.
Excellent post Nancy.

We have no CD player in the new card, it’s all USB ports. Hubby is putting tracks together on a key, so hopefully he might put some of my favourite music on it. Thing is our tastes are very different these days!

A little bit of his and a little bit of yours is a good compromise. 🎶♡

It was back when U2 released the single New Year Day that I became hooked.

Thanks to you Nancy because after I read your post, I looked up the songs on ‘Achtung Baby’. There is one on that album that I had forgotten about completely and need to add to my collection – ‘So Cruel’. I might add it tomorrow. You’re a gem.

A good choice to cover. I own the Joshua Tree album, but never bought the others. My son saw them live in Austin and raved about how good they were.

From what I’ve seen and heard, they put on a hell of a show! Thanks for sharing your thoughts today, Phil.

I love your choice today, Nancy. Bono adopts the perspective of being a person who has been there and done that, climbing the highest mountains and running through fields in search of meaning, which he describes as “to be with you.” He runs, he crawls, and he scales walls to find what he is looking for. Things were good as he, “kissed honey lips” and he “Felt the healing in her fingertips”, even though, “It burned like fire”, “This burning desire.” His spiritual journey has its highs and lows and when someone is able to speak in the tongue of angles, this could be a reference to a Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 13 where he says that people without love have nothing. He also has “held the hand of a devil. It was warm in the night” and he “was cold as a stone.” Searching without finding what you are looking for can be very dissatisfying. This song is an ode to universal human restlessness and the quest for meaning, that has left a man feeling cold, empty, and wanting answers. Yet, he continues, like he is on a divine mission that one day he will find what he is looking for.

Good choice. So you didn’t go for Uriah Heep, then 🤣

No, I did not! Bill suggested them but no …. far too predictable! 😂
U2 is not my favorite band but they continue to have an impact on the world and for that reason, they needed to be included. Thanks, Clive.

Oh, you’ve got the whole world to choose from … no notable “U” bands in Aussieland … The best I could do is RedgUm, with their classic “I Was Only 19” … April 25 is ANZAC Day (our Memorial Day) here in Australia …

Quite moving, dear Ivor. Thank you and Happy ANZAC Day!
There is something about this singer’s voice that remind me of Men Without Hats and the “Safety Dance“. Do you hear it?
