ROLLING STONES There is really only one other UK supergroup that comes close to the success of the Beatles and that group is the Rolling Stones. Sure, there are others but none measure up to the epic catalogue and longevity of one of the world’s greatest R&R bands ever. In 1960 while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were still in school they discovered a mutual interest in blues and R&B. The pair moved in and out of the ever changing group line-ups that made up London’s infant blues scene. An occasional sitter-in was guitarist Brian Jones. By early 1962, Jagger was the regular singer with the band. In the mid-60s they got a gig at London’s Marquee Club billed as Brian Jones and Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. The following year Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman joined. Reputation quickly spread by word of mouth and a record deal soon followed. The Stones assumed the “bad boy” look in contrast to the Beatles lovable “mop-tops” and the band quickly garnered momentum. From 1965 forward, all singles were Jagger/Richards compositions and the band developed a distinctive pop/rock style with strong blues undertones that lasts until this day. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” would prove to be a turning point for the Rolling Stones and the culture they helped shape, an era-defining hit that also transcended its time. The Stones are still performing it in part because their fans demand it. It was the song that really made them, changing them from just another band into a huge, monster band. The Stones, who had built a reputation as blues purists, had an instant R&R hit. A few weeks after its release, “Satisfaction” was the #1 song in the US and would remain in the upper regions of the charts for three months, dominating the summer of ’65. It didn’t hurt that the song’s sexual innuendo made some programmers nervous. Jagger’s desire to “make some girl” got censored on at least one big New York City radio station and on TV programs such as Shindig! and The Ed Sullivan Show.  In 1969, Jagger swore he wouldn’t be caught dead performing “Satisfaction” at age 50. Now Jagger is 81, and he and the Stones are closing their concerts with it. Even in spite of the Stones themselves, “Satisfaction” endures; sixty-two years, some 250 million records sold worldwide, legions of fans and the Rolling Stones remain on the top of the list. You gotta hand it to the boys; they have staying power.

From 1965, this is (“I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones

  1. I’m having trouble leaving comments on your sight. Hmm. Anyway, I hope this one sticks. Of course, the Rolling Stones would be chosen. The perfect selection! 🙂 Thank you for sharing their story. It must take you quite a lot of time to write these each day.

    1. Sorry for all the troubles you’ve been having while leaving comments, Brenda. Unfortunately, I don’t have a solution for you. I appreciate your patience! Thanks for your very gracious response. This is my first A To Z Challenge and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Choosing which songs to feature has been more difficult that I expected but it’s been a terrific learning experience and great fun listening to excellent music. I’m delighted to know you’re enjoying my choices! Thanks, Brenda!

  2. I got burned out on the stones years ago as the radio stations would play them every 15 minutes and usually the same songs. They were a power house band in their early years but today? relics of the past I rarely listen too. Great choice for the challenge though.

  3. Once a “Rolling Stones” fan, always a Rolling Stones fan … meanwhile, back in Aussieland we had the legendary rock band “Rose Tattoo”, and one of my favourite singers from my era, “Russel Morris”
