February Sky

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
where we’re asked to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured February artist and his song.

For the shortest month of the year, February sure had a lot going on – Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Black History Month. On a personal note, the 18th of February was our nephew’s birthday, the 21st was my mother’s 108th heavenly birthday, my sister and I share a birthday TODAY and our granddaughter Colette will be 5 years old tomorrow. 🎂

In April, 2024, Ringo Starr released “February Sky”….. the first single from his EP Crooked Boy. This was his fourth consecutive EP, with four original tracks all written and produced by Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes); Perry had also collaborated on two songs that appear on earlier Ringo EPs. Ringo made them his own, adding vocals and drums.

February Sky” is a moody-sounding mid-tempo song that features lyrics about keeping a positive attitude in a time of uncertainty and upheaval …. something we can all relate to in today’s world.

Ringo did a lot of social media in the lead-up to the release of Crooked Boy as well as a number of interviews for print, radio and podcasts. But the big deal was a personal appearance at the Amoeba Music record store in Hollywood on April 18, 2024, where Ringo was joined by Linda Perry. On that day, and only in person at the store, Amoeba made available an extremely limited edition 7” single of “February Sky”. Only 500 of those singles were pressed on a cool red vinyl and come in a picture sleeve (shown below).

LYRICS

Hear the sounds of devastation
Rumble through my REMs
It made its way into my veins
Hard to say what happens next

Gonna stand up, rise above the rain
Start a revolution in these dark days
Find the missing pieces that are vacant to the eye
Had enough of February skies

Beautiful is this wasteland
The shadows bask in the sunrise
Comforting all these strangers
Yeah, it’s gonna be alright

Gonna stand up, rise above the rain
Start a revolution in these dark days
Find the missing pieces that are vacant to the eye
Well, I’ve had enough of February skies

Gonna stand up, rise above the rain
Start a revolution in these dark days
Find the missing pieces that are vacant to the eye
Well, I’ve had enough of February skies

Gonna stand up, rise above the rain
Start a revolution in these brighter days
Find the missing pieces that were vacant to the eye
Well, I’ve had enough of February skies
Well, I’ve had enough of February skies

  1. Happy birthday, Pisces! Funny how you have so many birthdays in February, and I am surrounded by DamnVirgos… 😉

          1. 😉 I am surrounded by them! I told my boss (Virgo) that I was fired by two Virgos. She said, I hope you don’t expect that? I said no, you’re a woman – it’s the men that cause me grief!!

            That he is!

          1. Buahahaha! I didn’t even get the chance to say: Yo, Woman! I am NOT a DamnVirgo!

I am April. My son is two weeks before me in March and is also an Aries; as is my niece, the week before him!

  2. First of all, Happy Birthday to you and your sister, and I hope you guys are doing something fun! 🙂

Thanks for reminding me of this song, which I actually covered around the time Ringo issued his “Crooked Boy” EP – yet, I had cheerfully forgotten about it. “February Sky” is decent. I also think it goes pretty well with Ringo’s vocals. Linda Perry did a nice job writing this song!

Ringo who has become my favorite ex-Beatle continues to amaze me with his remarkable energy and positive attitude. Plus, I love the fact he still seems to get such a kick out of performing with his All-Starr Band – no matter whether it’s his own or Beatles songs, or songs by the members of the group.

    1. Thanks so much, Christian. It’s been a wonderful birthday. My sister and I FaceTimed and my little granddaughter was here. Every day with my grands is a good day!

Ringo is fabulous! He’s never had the best voice; he knows it and so do his fans. That’s what makes his post-Beatles success so amazing. He radiates fun, joy and enthusiasm; it’s contagious and the music is great even if his voice isn’t. His shows are sold out wherever he performs; it’s a happening and his fans love it (and him).

  3. Until recently, I had no idea of the enormity of Starr’s post Beatles solo output. I was surprised at how good some of it is including ‘February Sky’, ‘Liverpool’, ‘Time on my Hands’, ‘Photograph’ and ‘It Don’t Come Easy’.
