Madonna famously gave Al the “Like A Virgin” parody idea by quipping to a friend “I wonder when he’s going to do ‘Like a Surgeon‘.” Upon learning that, Al took the scalpel and ran with it! This video is where he really starts to hit his stride using the nonstop sight gags that become a trademark of his later videos. Here Al plays a dangerously incompetent doctor who, in between malpractice suits, has time to mimic Madonna’s sensual writhing to hilarious effect. Oh, speaking of The Queen of Pop ….. she loved Al’s video. Once again you’ll see the same team of songwriters worked on both songs; that is no coincidence and speaks volumes about the performers and writers desire to be part of Al’s incredible weirdness.

  2. I think “Like a Virgin” was the first song that brought Madonna on my radar screen. Initially, I dismissed her as a “dumb blonde” – boy, was I wrong! While I still feel “Like a Virgin” isn’t Madonna’s best song, Weird Al’s “Like a Surgeon” has always cracked me up. His video is hilarious and, I’m sorry to day, much more entertaining than Madonna’s clip.

    1. Hahaha! I think it’s safe to say Al’s videos in general are hilarious and more entertaining than all the originals he parodies.

      I’ve never been a fan of Madonna’s singing (except for Evita); she’s a much better dancer/choreographer, IMO.

  3. Funny stuff Nancy! I am not familiar with his songs, thanks for sharing. I was thinking what a fun creative life he has which led me to looking him up. Surprised to discover he is still performing. Hopefully not performing surgeries! 😱

  10. I always love seeing this one. So fun to watch. And was that actually Madonna in there blowing bubble gum? haha I never noticed that before. I’m glad she approved and liked his video of her song. 🙂

    1. That would have been quite a coup, Barbara, but no…..it’s a Madonna wanna be in the video. Al’s manager always contacts the performers in the videos Al wants to parody and if someone is reluctant or not interested, they’ll just back off. Almost all performers are very cooperative and know it’s all done in fun and not making fun of them.
