A Whole Lot Of Nothing

It was 1973. My cousin Drew was spending the summer with us. He was a huge nerd. I liked hard rock music; he liked rocks. I liked getting stoned; he liked collecting stones.

One day Drew burst into my room.

“Kevin! It’s deep purple! Hurry!”

“Deep Purple? Here?”

We raced through the woods; Drew ran up to a tree, grinning an idiot.

“What’s this, Drewfus?” I asked.

“I call it ‘Deep Purple Dogwood’ – my science experiment.”

“So no Ritchie Blackmore, no music, no weed, no nothing?”

Drew stared blankly at me.

“You’re a friggin’ drewfus. Besides, it’s florescent fuchsia. Drewfus!”

      1. If you watch it on YouTube it tells the story that this was shot for German TV, who wanted the band to be cavemen. It doesn’t say why!

I still think this was their best version of Joe South’s song. It got to #4 in the US but didn’t make the chart here.

        1. Interesting, considering I’ve never seen a cavemen depicted as wearing leather coats or Speedos! 😂

I haven’t seen that much personality from Blackmore since the time Graham Bonnet came out on stage with a short haircut and wearing a gold suit jacket! Boy, was Ritchie PO’d! 🤣

As much as I love the antics going on here (Jon Lord was hilarious), I don’t really think the sound of the two videos is that different. I will listen side-by-side again.

Thanks, Clive. This was amazing viewing and gets my vote for “Best Video Ever”! 🌟

          1. It’s weird, but that’s what makes it such fun. I think the difference is in the voices, and to an extent in the way they built the music up – either way it’s a great track and should have been a hit here first time round, though they did get a minor chart placing with the re-recorded version.

Glad you enjoyed it – I thought it might enliven your day 🤣
