Written for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #393
incorporating the word “occident” in exactly 23 words.
Also for Sue & Gerry’s Weekly Prompts Colour Challenge
(red) and FOWC (vague). In exactly 23 words, this is my flash.

Vague murmurings of pirates from the Occident did not deter them.
Fear quickly set in upon sighting a buccaneer ship with blood-red sails.

Thanks, Michele! I love it when the prompts go together easily and a nice little story is the result. Sometimes no one is more surprised than ME! 😁

Terrific pirate shanty, but hey-diddley dee, no pirate’s life for me. I shape-shift to my mermaid form the minute I spot a red sail!

Thanks, Liz! I don’t mind a few pirates, as long as they’re as good looking as the matinee idols from 40s!

This is great, Nancy! We had a night of singing sea shanties on my trip – no pirates appeared thankfully!

Sounds like a great time, Keith! I wouldn’t mind a few pirates like Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power dropping by!

Always a great pleasure, Sue. Sammi teased us with an unusual word this week. I’m glad I was able to pair the two prompts.
Thanks so much, Sue!

In my memory, it seems like we saw a lot of those pirate movies rerun on Saturday afternoons. We loved them, and the props were easy to make if you were a kid in the country!

Even for kids in the city … we were very creative with props!
Those movies were the greatest!

I looked them up. I’m not normally a fan of acts that come out of those ‘reality talent’ shows but these guys are good 😊

They’re not the first act to have benefited from the shows we love to hate! 😂

Thanks, Fan! I still have vivid memories of the dashing Errol Flynn as the hero in all the pirate movies from my childhood.

Good mind jolt, Nancy. As a child, when the family visited the island village of Port Aransas on the Texas coast every summer, I found myself yearning to sail the Gulf in a pirate ship. The closest I got was in a wooden rowboat in the ship channel, an old salt seaman at the helm ferrying myself and father to Saint Joe Island, which is where the famous pirate Jean Laffite buried some booty. After digging a few holes with my small shovel, I gave up and went back to being the reincarnate of Mark Twain.

Sounds lovely to me, Phil. When I was a child, I was fascinated by pirate movies; Errol Flynn was my hero and I’d watch, impatiently waiting for the inevitable confrontation with the evil Ramon Navarro while the thrilling battle between the ships raged in the background. That was my dream …. a pirate’s life for me, Yo Ho Ho!
Thanks, Phil!
