It Was 20 Years Ago Today

Written for Song Lyric Sunday. This week Jim Adams has asked
his readers in his post ‘Most Prestigious Award Category’ to write about
a song from an album that won a Grammy Award for ‘Album of the
Year’. My choice today is “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
from the Beatles’ Grammy Award-winning album of the same name.

On the Beatles’ final US tour in 1966, Paul McCartney was struck by the inventiveness of the West Coast hippy groups with names such as Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company. In November of that year, on a post-holiday flight from Nairobi to England, McCartney came up with the idea of an alter-ego for the Beatles, which would perform an entire album before an audience … and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band [the ‘band’, the album and the song(s)] began to emerge.
Sgt. Pepper’s is one of the first examples of a concept album – an approach to album design that would become increasingly important over the next few years and that persists into the present day. A concept album brings together a unified collection of songs to tell a story or capture an experience. Although Sgt. Pepper’s does not present a specific narrative, it encourages the listener to imagine that they are present at a live concert … just another example of the superior imagination, talent, artistry and creativity of the Beatles.
The scene is set by the opening song, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” which begins with ambient noises intended to create the illusion that a show is about to begin. Producer George Martin combined crowd noises he had recorded at a theatrical performance with the sounds of an orchestra warming up. We hear strings at the outset which are soon joined by an ensemble of French horns … hardly what one would expect to hear in a rock lineup! The music is greeted by a cheer from the crowd, and crowd sounds punctuate the performance, reminding the listener that they are “present” at a live event.
Paul McCartney’s lyrics also reinforce the setting. He begins by providing a brief history of the band, after which he introduces it by name. Later, with lines like “we hope that you enjoy the show”, “it’s wonderful to be here”, and “you’re such a lovely audience”, he clearly establishes the premise for the album. To further solidify the idea that we are hearing a live concert, McCartney concludes “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by transitioning directly into the second song and introduces a fictional singer, “the one and only Billy Shears” (voiced by Ringo Starr), who then launches into “With A Little Help From My Friends” to the sound of applause.
“SPLHCB” was so different from the Beatles’ previous albums that the Lads weren’t even the same people. They all took on the persona of another band led by Sgt. Pepper, with Ringo Starr adopting the name “Billy Shears.” However, Billy Shears has a connection to the Beatles that led to many fan conspiracy theories.
The song ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was recorded over four days. On February 1, 1967, the Beatles taped nine takes of the rhythm track, recording drums, bass and two guitars. The next day McCartney recorded his lead vocals and he, George Harrison and John Lennon taped their harmonies. The song was then left for over a month, until the French horns were overdubbed. McCartney also recorded a lead guitar solo, leaving the song almost complete. On March 6 they added the sounds of the imaginary audience and the noise of an orchestra tuning up, a combination of crowd noise from a 1961 recording of the comedy show “Beyond The Fringe”, and out-takes from an orchestral overdub session for “A Day In The Life”.

By the time the 10th GRAMMYs rolled around, the Beatles had already made their mark, earning Best New Artist honors at the 7th GRAMMY Awards three years earlier. But with their magnum opus Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the group transitioned to music royalty. They nabbed five GRAMMY nominations for 1967, and ultimately took home two for the coveted Album Of The Year prize and Best Contemporary Album. It was the first rock LP to receive that coveted honor. Sgt. Pepper’s proved to be a hit in other categories as well. The album’s pioneering sonics earned engineer Geoff Emerick Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical honors while art directors Peter Blake and Jann Haworth took home Best Album Cover, Graphic Arts for the album’s seminal cover art.

This is “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” & “With A Little Help From My Friends” from the GRAMMY Award-winning Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album by the Beatles.

LYRICS

It was 20 years ago today
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They’ve been going in and out of style
But they’re guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you’ve known for all these years
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

We’re Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
We hope you will enjoy the show
We’re Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sit back and let the evening go
Sgt. Pepper’s lonely, Sgt. Pepper’s lonely
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

It’s wonderful to be here
It’s certainly a thrill
You’re such a lovely audience
We’d like to take you home with us
We’d love to take you home

I don’t really want to stop the show
But I thought you might like to know
That the singer’s gonna sing a song
And he wants you all to sing along
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Billy Shears
And Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Yeah

Billy Shears

What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

What do I do when my love is away?
Does it worry you to be alone?
How do I feel by the end of the day?
Are you sad because you’re on your own?

No, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody?
I need somebody to love
Could it be anybody?
I want somebody to love

Would you believe in a love at first sight?
Yes, I’m certain that it happens all the time
What do you see when you turn out the light?
I can’t tell you, but I know it’s mine

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, get high with a little help from my friends
Oh, I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody?
I just need someone to love
Could it be anybody?
I want somebody to love

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends
Oh, I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes, I get by with a little help from my friends
With a little help from my friends

  1. The day the album came out, our drummer, Little Spector rushed to the Melody Shop in Northpark Center and grabbed two albums. We had a gig the following weekend at the Studio Club in Dallas. Somehow, he found a record of crowd noises and such and recorded them on his reel to reel tape machine. We learned the song you speak of, and it was not an easy task, then took on A Little Help From My Friends. At the gig, our equipment manager, Stanly, piped the reel to reel into our PA system and played what had been recorded, then we did Sgt. Pepper as close to the record as we could get. From that moment on, we began to use the recorder for other sounds to blend in with our music. If the Beatles could do it, so could we. I still have my original album from 1967 as well as all their albums from the first to the last.

    1. Fabulous story, Phil!  If the Beatles could do it, so could we. I love talking with fellow Beatles lovers; we are a passionate lot!

Like you, I also have all my original albums …. and scrapbooks, magazines, posters …. I have it all, including my ticket stubs to the 1965 concert in Shea Stadium.

Our generation of music is the best and I’m so grateful for living it. Thanks for an excellent memory share.

  2. Great choice! Always a fan of the Beatles. I think my sister had this album. I like the song, but I really like how you explained all about it. I never knew any of that. Mostly I just tried when I was younger to figure out who all the people were on the album cover. haha 🙂

    1. Hahaha! Didn’t we all, Barbara?

It’s very interesting what you said about not knowing any of what I wrote. I was talking to my husband about the album last night, saying how we listened to the songs when we were younger but we really didn’t hear what they were all about. As we got older and we heard the lyrics, they started to make sense. There’s a wonderful story being told; I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Barbara!

      Thanks so much!

  3. That is an awesome album cover – easy to see why it is award winning. 🥇 Your post reminded me of my first introduction to The Beatles’ music. A neighbor had all their albums and played some for me – I was five. My parents listened to mostly country, with some rock but not the Beatles. Fun memory – thank you!

    1. Most welcome, Michele, and thank you for your comments. 😊

The Beatles have been in my life since I was 13 years old so it always surprises me when I meet someone who is not as familiar with them and their music as I am. I consider it an honor and a mission to pass on their legacy by introducing their music to those “less fortunate” than I. 😅

I’m pleased to know you liked the album cover; it’s definitely epic, just like the Beatles! 🤩

  4. Personally…I think it’s the most famous album ever…not my favorite Beatles album…that would be The White Album but the timing, the cover, the songs melting into each other…it was absolutely perfect in 1967. It probaby also influenced Pete Townshend of the Who to do Tommy.

    1. Thanks for sharing your opinion, Max; I feel exactly the same way. My favorite Beatles album varies from week to week; the same is true for my favorite song. Out of their entire catalog … and it’s vast … there’s only one song I don’t like – Revolution 9 (No 9).

I made the mistake of watching the Sgt Pepper movie with Peter Frampton, the Gibb Brothers and Billy Preston; yikes, that was awful! 😂

      1. Yea that song or experiment is on a lot of not like lists. One of my favorite songs on that album is not a well known one…but Sexy Sadie…I love Lennon’s voice anyway but it’s great in that one.
Oh…I have sympathy for you….you can never get back that time you watch that. Excuse me for including this quote but I had to…it was a YIKES moment.
This is Mr. Robin Gibb: “Kids today don’t know the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper. And when those who do see our film and hear us doing it, that will be the version they relate to and remember. Unfortunately, the Beatles will be secondary. You see, there is no such thing as the Beatles. They don’t exist as a band and never performed Sgt. Pepper live, in any case. When ours comes out, it will be, in effect, as if theirs never existed.”

  5. I queued in the early hours of the morning outside the HMV record shop in London’s Oxford Street to get a first day edition of this album! It was in mono then, the stereo version came later. It’s one of my proudest possessions and apparently worth a fair bit – not that I would part with it!

    1. I love the fact that you shared this personal memory, Keith! Our love of the Beatles cannot be explained or understood to those who do not feel the same way (a concept I cannot wrap my head around!). Their music will live on long after we are gone. 😎🖤

I am giving this LP to my 15 year old granddaughter for Christmas. Good thing she doesn’t read my posts! 🤣

Thanks so much, my friend! 😊

    1. Thank you kindly for your very gracious comments, Jim. We grew up with the Beatles, you know …. a couple of years behind but not enough to matter. They have and always will be a huge part of my life. I cannot imagine the world without Beatles music in it. It is the Universal Soundtrack.

    1. This was a no-brainer for me, Christine. As a true lover of the Beatles all the way back to 1964, I already knew this album was on the Grammy list. What a cutting-edge LP … one I have come to appreciate more and more over the years.

Thanks for reading, listening and commenting, Christine. Glad you enjoyed St. Pepper! 🥳

  6. I love this album. I’m probably one of the few people who isn’t a fan of this group – this album is the exception. Some of these songs are beautiful.

    1. That’s ok, Mx. You don’t have to be a Beatles fan; I’m a big enough fan for the two of us!

Over the years I have come to appreciate this album for the cutting-edge masterpiece it truly is. Inspired, creative and oh so clever; it really is one of a kind.

Thanks for stopping by, reading, listening and commenting. Much appreciated! 🤩

  7. A great choice. They were nominated several times for this award but only won it once, losing to what I saw as inferior albums. Did I have a bet with myself who you’d choose today? Of course I did! Did I win my bet? Of course I did! 🤣

      1. And the first British winner too: the American taste for schmaltz had dominated prior to that, though they didn’t choose The Beatles again despite four other nominations.

It was an easy one, wasn’t it. I saw that on the list, thought about it, then decided to leave it to you 🤣

    1. Having been a fan of the Beatles since before you were born, CA, it never ceases to blow my mind that there are people who are unaware of them and their impact on the world. But that’s OK; I won’t let that slow me down or stop preaching the Beatles Gospel!
Did you know there are prestigious colleges offering courses on the Beatles? And not just a fluff minor subject but an actual course students can major in or get an advanced degree. I was obviously born before my time; I would have loved a course like that!

Sorry, I digress! I’m very happy to know you enjoyed my post today. There’s lots more where that came from! Thanks, CA! 😊

    1. Oh boy! The heat is on now, Willow! I will try my best to live up to everyone’s expectations! 😂

As Clive correctly guessed … and I readily admit … this was a total no-brainer for me. I find it mind-blowing that there are people in the world who are not familiar with the Beatles; I suppose with every new generation the risk of that increases. Well, it is our collective duty to preach the Gospel According to the Beatles! Can I get an AMEN! 🙏🏼

I proudly wear my Beatles heart on my sleeve; they are and always will be the greatest band to have ever lived! 🤩

Thanks for your fab comments, my dear friend! 😎💛😎
