Written for Ovi Poetry Challenge 65:
“Expectations” is our inspiration.
Author’s Note: As most of you know, I had back surgery on August 22.
Recuperation is much tougher than I thought or expected. I have no idea
if I’ll ever be the same. What I do know is I’m not as bad as I was
three weeks ago and in another three weeks I’ll be better than I am today.
Thanks, D, for helping me realize that. ♡

One foot at a time
Try staying in a straight line
It’s ok, you’re doing fine
But everything really hurts
You need to take it slow
You have nowhere to go
Practice walking to and fro
One leg then the other
I didn’t expect this pain
Please let me go home again
And I’ll never complain
Just suck it up and walk
My hopes were to high
Like a big pie in the sky
Now I just want to cry
Grow up and stop the nonsense
You’re stronger than you think
Don’t make such a stink
Soon you’ll be in the pink
You got this, girl

I’m glad you’re getting better as time goes on. Recovery from major medical things is always a long slow process, but you do have this. The change won’t seem apparent day to day. Just keep looking back and comparing, so you can see how far you’ve come.

Thanks, Iris. There are times when the pain is so intense, I wonder if something’s wrong or if I did something I shouldn’t have. It’s a game of two steps forward, one step back which can be very frustrating.

I still can’t believe what little pain relief they allowed you, but despite that you will get better over time. Two steps forward and one step back still gets you a step further forward each time.

Lovely, Michele. There are times when I tell my husband “If I had known how painful this surgery was going to be, I never would have gone through with it.” Well, there’s nothing I can do about that now except look forward and hope each new day will bring a little improvement. Thank you for your kind words!

I am glad you found it so, thank you Nancy. It can be hard to find the right word(s) when a friend is going through a difficult time, especially when we can’t bring that friend soup! 💝 Mine was an injury, but I do know how hard and painful back issues can be. The healing journey is a great teacher.

If that’s the case, by the time I’m done with this journey I will be quite wise and very tired! 😂
Thanks for your encouraging thoughts, Michele.

The poem says it all! Days will turn into weeks, then months. Hopefully, before long, the pain will be a distant memory and your quality of life will have improved considerably. 🌹

An absolutely perfect comment, Debbie. Take a look above, at the response I wrote to Michele. That just about covers the way I’m feeling now. If only one person had said to me “Just be aware that this is one of the toughest surgeries and recuperations” , I would have been forewarned and prepared. Thank you for your amazing comments. 🌹

I love that song. It was one of my grandmother’s favorites, and we would sing it together when I was a kid. I thought the words were very funny.
