Written for Weekend Writing Prompt #358 ~ Superscript

Just like something out of the evening news.
Did the attractive young woman, a former nurse and mother of one toddler, actually feed her little boy bleach or was it just a dreadful accident?
How could any jury not believe the clean-faced white woman in the proper skirt and blouse as she tearfully recounted the events of that horrific morning?
But they did believe her and only the most perceptible viewer in the courtroom or the living room caught the slightest cold-blooded superscript curl of her top left lip.

Too often, the jury system is no more reliable than a toss of a coin. The best performance wins the day. How long will it be before someone comes up with a fool-proof lie detector?

It’s quite discouraging, isn’t it? All valid points you make, Keith.

You have to watch those “clean-cut” perfect ones… So much easier to believe they couldn’t possibly. There are horrible people in the world!

The judicial system has a lot of holes in it and lie detector machines are antiquated. As I commented to someone else, if this wasn’t so tragic, it would be a joke.

Oh, there would be people who would find a way to trick the machine regardless. It is an awful story!

I love a bit of Celtic music. Lovely. I don’t know anything about the case.

You’re better off not knowing. Just enjoy the sounds and the ink!
Thanks, Matt.

Have your heard Eleanor McEvoy’s ‘Only a Woman’s Heart’? I hope you don’t mind me sending it below:

Squeaky clean on the outside, rotten on the inside 😳 a tragedy of a case that she was found innocent.

If that was a few years ago, was her defence ‘the President told me to do it?’
Nice to hear some English folk music, which has many themes like this!

That song brought me to tears, as if I needed a reason! Perfect, isn’t it?
Thanks, Clive.

It’s a lovely rendition of a variant of one of our traditional songs. We have many folk singers here with beautiful voices like Emily. My favourite is Kate Rusby, who has many tearjerkers in her repertoire, both traditional and self-penned.

Thanks for the info, Clive. I think I’ll be checking out Kate Rusby later today.

Have fun! Try her song Underneath The Stars – when the brass band kicks in it gets me every time, even once when she sang it at a concert I attended!

OMGosh, Clive! That was gorgeous. I’m overwhelmed. I need to go outside and walk a bit. Thank you!

It is a really beautiful piece of music, isn’t it. She has a wonderful voice and has been making superb records for nearly thirty years. She did an album of cover versions of her favourite pop songs back in 2020. One of them was Manic Monday, for which she recorded the video at home with her husband and daughters. Susanna Hoffs sent her a note of thanks and congratulations for it. If you want to see a lot more of her, just put her name in the search box on my blog: there are quite a lot!

Truly. The jury found her guilty of four misdemeanor counts of providing false information. If this wasn’t so tragic it would be a joke.
Thanks, Liz.

Well done, Nancy!! Freezes the blood to even think about…yet, being a true-crime addict, I’ve read so many similar stories.

That came as a surprise, Vee. Granted, we are new friends but I didn’t have you pegged as a true-crime fan. This is loosely based on the Casey Anthony case; perhaps you’re familiar with it.
It’s good to get back into my writing; it’s my salvation.
Thanks so much, Vee. I’m glad you enjoyed this one.

Oh yes, I still can’t believe she wasn’t convicted–but there’s a Higher Judge waiting. I read those books to enjoy some vicarious justice. Did you think I was “too churchy” to read that stuff?😉 I have multi-faceted interests…I’m also a big rodeo fan.

Churchy! That’s a great word! We went to my BIL’s funeral Mass on Saturday; other than that I can’t remember the last time I went to church. I used to be religious, a good catholic; now I’m more spiritual and aim to be a good christian. I talk to God. I don’t need a middle man.
Rodeo! I must admit, they look like fun. Talk about whiplash! 😳
