Frequently, the trick of cover songs is to take the bombastic and quiet it down, ‘acoustify‘ a track, if you will. Jimi Hendrix does the opposite here, morphing folkie Bob Dylan into a churning R&R freight train, fueled by the urgent guitar licks that only Hendrix could pull off. Jimi was a super-fan of Dylan and recorded a number of pristine covers, but years later, “All Along The Watchtower” remains the cream of the crop and the song’s definitive remake version.
But first, from 1967, here is Bob Dylan with “All Along The Watchtower”
You’re gonna wanna raise the volume for this, then stand back. Here’s Hendrix with his amped-up cover of “Watchtower”.
That’s today’s Twofer Tuesday!
See you on the flip side. 😎

I always liked Dylan’s original but Jimi knocked it out of the park, a bit like Joe Cocker did to With A Little Help From My Friends.

Exactly, and a great comparison to Joe Cocker’s Beatles cover.
Thanks, Clive.

The quirkiest version I think, is this one;

Yikes! This got recorded? The record producers must have been on their own personal XTC. That’s the only plausible explanation. 😵💫
Congratulations! You are the winner of the most bizarre addition to my post to date! 😝 😳 😂

Yes, it’s the last track on their debut album ‘White Music’. I’m sure I read somewhere about the reason they recorded the track in that bizarre way?

The characters in this ballad consist of a joker, a thief, Business men, a Plowman, Princes, the women, Barefoot servants and Two riders. Most people seem to agree that the two riders are the joker and the thief. Just about everyone also agrees that the last part of this song is the beginning of this song, and it should start out with “All along the watchtower” and the riders approaching. The version that made the most sense to me was that this song is about the record industry.

That was a great post, Jim, and I was immediately reminded of the mini-series called Vinyl starring Bobby Cannavale, produced by Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese and a few others. Thanks for the link.

I think Jimi took this song and made it his own. I totally forget it’s Dylan’s!!

I was a latecomer to Hendrix. At school, his name would be scrawled on many desks, but I steadfastly stood by my guitar hero, Rory Gallagher. .
Then, about 20 years later, I realised it was OK to have more than one guitar hero!
(Still not so big on Dylan, mind.)
😉😀

Well, if you’re looking for a guitar hero, Rory Gallagher is no slouch!
You might be interested in checking out this guy when you have some time. I’d like to know what you think.
Dylan …. he can’t be touched, IMO.
Thanks. Cee Tee

Wow! Well impressive. A tad ‘showy ‘ / over intricate for me personally, but pretty damned amazing. I see he was influenced by another of my ‘heroes’ – Zal Cleminson of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band – one of my = top bands of all time. (My pal’s sister is Zal’s ex-wife. 😉 )
While we’re on great guitarists, I also love Roy Buchanan, and THIS guy. I first got into him when he played with Emmylou Harris in the Hot Band. He was previously in Heads Hands & Feet.
Still rockin @ 80 years old. : )

Yep, Govan is all that but he’s got the chops to back it up and that works for me.
Oh, damn straight! Albert Lee is one of the greats, playing along with Clapton, Bill Wyman, The Everly Bros …. the list goes on and on …. and he’s still performing.
Thanks, Cee Tee. Great share!
