WARNING: THIS BLOG WAS NOT CREATED FOR BEATLEMANIACS!
If you’re on the fence about the Beatles or if you just don’t like them,
this blog is for you. My goal is not to convert you; it’s to expose you
to the lesser-known Beatles songs we don’t hear day in and day out.
These great tunes will show you just how amazing the Beatles are.
Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, pull up a chair and enjoy the tunes!

Welcome back to F4! We’re going to take a trip back in time.
I’m featuring another Beatle covering one of their favorite rock & roll songs; if you’ve been keeping track you know there’s only one Beatle I haven’t featured yet. So, who’s the last man standing? You’re about to find out …. but first, let’s listen to the original song which the Beatles covered.
From 1960, here are The Shirelles with their hit, “Boys”
🪲
And here are the Beatles with their version of “Boys” with Ringo doing the singing.
There’s no doubt the fabulous girl groups from the early 60s broke boundaries and paved the way for future artists BUT …. and you knew there was a but coming …. this definitely goes to the high octane performance by Ringo and the boys. You can tell they are all into this one 100% and having the time of their lives! We can’t forget, however …. without groups like The Shirelles, the Beatles might not even exist.
What do you say …. girls or boys?
Join me again tomorrow; only five days left.
See you on the flip side. 😎

PS – If any video won’t play for you, I’ve provided the name of the song and who did it so you can find it on YouTube. It’s a pain in the ass but it does happen from time to time. My apologies.

I didn’t realise The Beatles covered so many songs.
They each have their own charm.

There are even more, Dale. According to the books I’ve read, when the Beatles were first starting out, the Cavern Club was a sort of dinner club where the patrons were often older. They learned a few songs aimed at the older set, covers such as Ain’t She Sweet, A Taste of Honey and Til There Was You … all from Broadway show tunes.
You’re right about them each having their own voice and charm. Each one had a preference to what they covered but they all agreed on one thing: they loved American rock & roll!

Oh, I get that most bands start off by covering others. I meant I didn’t realise they had recorded so many.
I meant the two versions of the song… but yes, each of The Beatles had their sound.

I’ve got mixed feelings about these 2. Otoh, it should be sung by females with the lyrics, but the production quality of this recording diminishes it. I’m used to Ringo singing the high energy Beatles version. I’ve got to go with The Beatles but they should have modified the lyrics to girls.

I hear ya, Lisa, and I agree. I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember when the Shirelles had a hit with this song but I am and I really dug singing the lyrics from a true female point of view. When I saw “Boys” on the Beatles album jacket way back when, I was wondering why they were singing a song about boys and how they were going to adjust it for a guy to sing. They made small changes in the lyrics which allowed them to keep the title unchanged. I think it’s a fantastic cover without too many changes.

Both are really good. I’d call it a draw. By the way Nancy, there’s a great 12 page article of the Beatles in 1964 in this months Record Collector magazine.

Thanks for the tip, Glyn; I’ll see if I can find it. If you have the link, maybe you can share it with me.

Can’t choose between ’em. George’s guitar and Ringo’s drumming…but I do love me some sweet sax, too!

Buddy Guy does a great cover of Money at the Festival Express concert which may be better that the Beatles cover.

Thats a hard one to choose because they are so different , the Shirelles original is so polished and the the Beatle’s version raw and nasal with Ringo at the helm!
Too hard to choose …. But hubby piped up “That took me right back to walking up to Pitshanger Lane you know along that road at the top of Avalon Road before you cross the Argyle Road” … That’s Beatle magic for you! 💜

Jeez, Willow …. obviously I’ve got no idea where any of those places are but it doesn’t matter! I understand exactly what your hubs is saying and he’s right. There aren’t many groups that have that kind of magic spell over us, to transport us back to where it all started. Well said and thank your hubby for me!
Yeah, Beatle-magic it is! ❤︎
