WARNING: THIS BLOG WAS NOT CREATED FOR BEATLEMANIACS!
If youâre on the fence about the Beatles or if you just donât like them,
this blog is for you. My goal is not to convert you; itâs to expose you
to Beatles songs we donât hear day in and day out. These are treasures.
Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, pull up a chair and enjoy the tunes!

Welcome to Feb Fab Faux Four, my new blog for the month of February featuring Beatles songs and their cover versions, also known as remakes.
Letâs face it âŠ. anyone can do a remake; unfortunately, many people have who shouldnât have. Case in point â William Shatnerâs cover of âLucy In The Sky With Diamondsâ. So whatâs a good cover song? I donât think thereâs one definitive answer to that. When I hear a cover, I want to be able to say âYeah! I like what they did with that!â, but it shouldnât be so different from the original that itâs unrecognizable or worse …. boring.âItâs a very personal thing.
The idea for this blog came about one day when I flipped on my car radio and a Beatles song was playing; I knew right away it wasnât the original. Truth be told, Iâm rather unforgiving when it comes to Beatles remakes but there was something special about the song that was on and I was looking forward to hearing more good Beatles covers.
As luck would have it, that song was the last one in the line-up so I missed all the other songs that had already played. However, since it was SiriusXM, I was able to listen to the whole show later that day and there were some good covers. While doing my research over the last few weeks, something really surprised me: there are quite a few remakes I actually liked better than the originals. Thatâs something I never thought Iâd say!
The Beatles songs featured here are ones that arenât played every day so if you’re hoping to hear “She Loves You” or “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, you’re out of luck. FYI â the format of my blog will never change: the original will always be played first, followed by the cover. And here’s some good news: my future posts will be much shorter than this one; less talk and more music!
The remake you’re about to hear is the one that was playing that day in my car. It was rather unexpected to find out who did this cover. Even though this artist has been around for a long time, he may be new to some of you. This is definitely not the genre he’s known for. I really like this remake âŠ. itâs edgy, with a very cool arrangement and his guitar-playing is kick-ass.
OK, let’s get it on! First, here are the Beatles with “Things We Said Today”
đȘČ
And here is country music legend Dwight Yoakam with his remake of “Things We Said Today”
One thing’s for sure: we all have different likes and dislikes. I really dug this Dwight Yoakam cover but when I played it for my husband, he wasn’t crazy about it.
So, which one did you prefer? Audience participation is not required but if you’d like to share your comments with me, please do; I read and answer all of them.
I’ll be spinning another set of tunes tomorrow; I hope you’ll stop by. My wish for you during this month is for you to be able to say “Yeah! I like what they did with that!”
See you on the flip side. đ

PS – If any video won’t play for you, I’ve provided the name of the song and who did it so you can find it on YouTube. It’s a pain in the ass but it does happen from time to time. My apologies.

I really like this song, the remake andcover is brilliant!

It’s another great from the Fab Four!
I’m so glad you dug up these older posts; you’re giving me ideas about bringing it back to life!

I’m a sucker for Dwight’s voice. He makes this cover sound good. I just read Keith’s comment and think maybe he was trying to hide his twang on it. Still, it gleams through from time to time. Of course Fab 4 is my fave on this one. Question: have you seen The Smithereens album of Beatles covers? If you haven’t written all of your posts for this, check it out and you might get a few from it.

I’m a sucker for Dwight, too, Lisa so when I became aware of his cover, I had to go with it. I don’t know it he’s trying to hide his twang or not; that never came into play bc I like his work so much. And I sure do like his hat! As the song goes, “Save a horse, ride a cowboy!”âđ€
Thanks for the tip about the Smithereens; for some reason I thought they were a professional Beatles tribute band and I won’t be including any professional tributes in my blog. I’ll be happy to check them out and give a listen. I’m always grateful for suggestions.

“B-sides The Beatles”

Even though they cover them they are not a Beatles cover band. They have a bunch of their own tunes also.

This is one of my favorite Beatle cuts. I heard Dwight’s version while working in Country radio. Dwight is a unique bird. I’ve met him before and … that’s a story for another day. I was disappointed with his version only because I know that he can sing. To me, it sounds like he’s barely showing up. Beatles for sure.

I can understand what you’re saying, Keith; I took it more as a smooth, laid back style.
His cover appealed to me very much and I still think it’s a great one; I was a Dwight Yoakam fan long before I heard this cover.
Thanks for your very interesting comments.

By and large I donât usually trust anyone who needs to wear a cowboy hat to sing. This was no exception – the Beatles, by a country mile for me.

I am glad you are not going to do the biggest hits. This way is more interesting.
As you know, I can give or take the Beatles so I’ll disagree with Fandango – because I can! I love me some Dwight and think he did a nice job with this. You recognize the song but he gave it his twang.

Exactly my thinking, Dale; so glad you enjoyed this one! I hope to see an equal number of đđŒ and đđŒ
I don’t want to scare people away. This blog was created for all music lovers but especially for people who aren’t Beatlemaniacs. Featuring songs we don’t hear all the time will, I hope, appeal to everyone. These tunes are treasures!
