Welcome to Birthday Thursdays! Each week I will feature someone from the world of music whose birthday falls on this day. There won’t be any chit chat from me, no facts and figures – just some great tunes (and an occasional surprise). Check it out right here every Thursday and enjoy the music.

Somehow your message fell through the cracks, Keith. Sorry about that!
I was never a big fan of Bobby Goldsboro; his songs were a bit too schmaltzy for me but we can still wish him a Happy Birthday! 🥳
Thanks!

Bobby Goldsboro used to show up on the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was hosting. I remember he was a real nut. Great singer, and he had a syndicated TV show that was pretty OK. He used to sustain injuries pretty regularly, usually by doing something dumb. I still really like “Honey,” even though I still think she killed herself. I also like “Watchin’ Scotty Grow,” which was a man telling a story about his relationship with his young son.

Unless I’m mixing my songs up, I always thought Honey got a call from the doctor telling her she had cancer or something like that and then died shortly thereafter. I honestly can’t remember seeing BG on the Tonight Show; I vaguely remember his TV show but have clearer memories of him on the Ed Sullivan Show. Obviously, he didn’t have a lasting impression on me.

That might very well be, but I don’t think he makes it that clear…

I remember this one too, and preferred it to Honey.

Thanks, KK! Many of his songs were terribly sad.
The first song is from Midnight Cowboy and he does it well.

I didn’t listen to Honey because it is too sad.

It is; he did a lot of sad songs.

For me, that is the saddest song ever written.

I really don’t like to listen to it;
for me it’s sad, bordering on maudlin.

He starts out reminiscing about how much the tree has grown, but then you find out that his wife is dead and that always gets to me.

Songs you can sing along with. Or hum along with. Easily recognized even if not heard for years. You can almost remember what you were doing and where you were when you first first them.

Aren’t they, though. I just wish he’d done more “happy” songs; he’s also a brilliant oil painter and does drawings for kids books. I’m sure there’s a word for that but I’m just getting my first infusion of coffee. Ah … illustrator, that’s it!

Glad to provide the memory!
That’s why I’m here, to bring the long-forgotten musicians to WP. 😂

There’s a sweet sadness to these songs, especially the last line of the last song 😦 “Because you see, I’m that funny little clown.”
Amazing music, beautiful voice, happy birthday Bobby Goldsboro!

You’re right about that, Sweets; he always looks lonely and lost. As far as I know, other than a very nasty divorce due to false allegations by his daughter, he’s been living a good life so who knows?
I love “Everybody’s Talking” from “Midnight Cowboy”; I probably should have posted that one last and ended on a happy note. Oh well. PSA: Play the songs in reverse order! 😂
