Rochelle at “Friday Fictioneers” has challenged us to
write a 100 word piece about how the image below inspired us.
This is my response to her challenge.

“We’re out of gas, Pepper.”
“Look, Brad! There’s a light! Let’s walk to it.”
“Good idea! Maybe someone can help.”
Arriving at a house, the couple was struck by its serene beauty. They dreamed of owning a home like this.
They knocked and a woman answered.
“May I help you?”
Brad explained their situation; the woman said there were full gasoline cans in the garage and invited them in.
The interior was breathtaking.
“Your house is gorgeous!” exclaimed Pepper.
“Oh, it’s not mine; I’m the selling agent. You interested?”
Brad and Pepper exchanged surprised and delighted glances.
“We’ll take it!”

This is “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Dear Nancy,
What a delightful and fanciful story. How wonderful they found their dream house all because they ran out of gas. Love it.

Rochelle

I remember my mom singing “Our House” when I was a kid. I didn’t know what song was or who sang it until right now.

Nancy, this brought to mind a friend’s real-life story. She and her husband were frustrated not finding their dream home when real estate shopping.
One weekend driving through a neighborhood they had not previously checked out she saw a garage sale and asked her husband to stop. He complied but was baffled because going to garage sales or tag sales was not something they usually did.
She walked in and inquired if the garage sale attendant owned the house and said, “I’d like to buy your house. Can I have a tour?” The house was not listed on the market and the owner said it was NOT for sale but did give a tour. They made a deal that day, with their attorney’s help closed the sale and in 30 days moved into the house. Until the husband got severe dementia in his retirement which necessitated a move to a skilled nursing facility, they lived in that dream home.

What an incredible story! That must have been some house and I’m sure she made a very nice offer to get the owner to agree to sell.
Thanks for sharing that great story, Manette!

It evokes the question, “Are your fictional stories birthed from real-life?” They say, “truth is stranger than fiction.” 😉

Oh, sure … many are, but it’s fun to keep the reader guessing which are based on reality and which pure fiction.
Great comments as usual, Manette

This story could easily have gone to the dark side. I’m glad it didn’t.

Yes, you’re right. I’m glad it didn’t; enough dark side!

It must be lovely to find the house of your dreams in that way. The last four of my choices were compromises due to one circumstance or another. I feel quite envious.

We’re in our third house at the mo and came upon it in a similar fashion as the characters in my story. Of course we didn’t buy it on the spot but we were quite taken by it and have been here 35 years. Just like me, it’s old now and probably needs new plumbing but the idea of physically moving is daunting … so we won’t.

It was meant to be. But I feel uneasy. Nah, I’ll relax. It’s their dream house and they’ll live many happy years there. Or maybe not. Oh gosh – can’t make up my mind here. I love a story that gets me all in a bother. 😊

Well, I certainly didn’t mean to make you uneasy.
Let’s allow ourselves to believe they will live happily …. at least for now.
Thanks for your delightful comments!

I was thinking of Brad and Janet from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1974). They also ran out of gas and walked to the light of a distant house. Their outcome was very different.

My husband and I did something very much like that when we bought our current house. And we didn’t even run out of gas.
