Welcome to Birthday Thursdays here in The Rhythm Section. Each week I will feature someone from the world of music whose birthday falls on that day. There won’t be any chit chat from me, no facts and figures – just some great tunes (and an occasional surprise). Check it out right here every Thursday and enjoy the music.
Happy Birthday to Buddy Holly
Born September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas

A legend. One can only imagine how his music would have evolved had he lived.

That’s a fascinating thought, Keith. Did you know Dion was supposed to be on the ill-fated plane but refused to pay the $36 for the ticket? He said that was how much his parents paid for one month’s rent for their Bronx apartment and he wasn’t going to spend that kind of money for a plane ride!
The Beatles were big fans of Buddy Holly’s music and the name “Crickets” influenced them to go with “Beatles”.

I did know that. Waylon Jennings was also almost on that flight. I remember him telling the story. Waylon was a member of the Crickets.

An excellent start to the series. Back then singers like Buddy Holly had a distinctive and instantly recognisable sound, unlike most of today’s warblers who all sound the same to me!

Thanks so much, Keith! Glad to know you enjoyed today’s birthday tribute; the plan is to have fun and continue bringing you great music!
You are so right about Buddy Holly and his instantly recognizable sound; same as Roy Orbison, Elvis and let’s not forget Tiny Tim! 😂

That’ll be the day when we again see performers dressed in suits and bow ties and neat hair cuts and not doing all sort of nasty gymnastics. lol Love Buddy Holly

“Nasty gymnastics”! Oh, Sighs … that is hilarious! But I see your point and I agree that much of it is off the charts. This whole crazy world of ours needs a good cleaning up, I say!

I say aye to that, but I bet the nays have it.

You’re so right, Allen! No way I could let that beauty slip by.

For some reason, the song reminds me of Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-A-Lu-La”.

Gene Vincent definitely had that certain something (not unlike Elvis); I always liked his recordings. Let’s see what everyone else thinks:

Those boys all came from the same background and were playing to the same audience.

You’re right, Allen, and they were playing the same stuff, too. That was the main reason the Beatles decided to start writing their own music. By not playing the same tunes everyone else was, they figured their audiences would take notice of them. I guess they were correct in their reasoning!
