Name That Tune, Sixties

NAME THAT TUNE (September 3, 2023)

Time, my friends, for another round of Name That Tune; are you feeling lucky today? Let’s see how quickly you can guess the name of this song and the artist(s) who made if famous. It’s one of my personal favorites and you’ll find out why when you get to clue #5.

So how about we get this game going? Are ya ready? Ok, let’s do this thing!

  1. This song from 1969 has been called the most beautiful love song ever written – quite a fete considering the phrase “I love you” is never used in the song.
  2. The composer of this song was a member of the most famous and prolific rock band in history. It’s also his first real attempt at writing a song on his own and finally being taken seriously by the other members, two of whom wrote almost all the group’s songs.
  3. By the late 1970s, today’s featured song had been covered by over 150 artists. BTW, the most covered song of all time is another song by the group to which our featured singer once belonged.
  4. Our performer dedicated this song to his wife at the time; she must have been quite something because this is the second song I’m aware of that has been dedicated to her. [If that clue sounds even a tiny bit familiar, maybe that’s because one of my posts in May from In The Groove was about the other song dedicated to this very desirable woman. Were you paying attention back then?]
  5. Every year since its release in 1969 this song has been among the most requested first dance songs for new brides and grooms. In fact, it was the first dance for me and Mr. Bill … and, as you know, I think he’s really quite something himself!

Have you figured out what the most beautiful love song ever written is? I’ll keep you in suspense no longer; let’s go find out. You know what to do:

If you said The Beatles’ “Something” composed entirely by George Harrison and sung by him, you are correct! Are you ready to hear it?

Here’s a little refresher for you: George Harrison wrote “Something” in 1969 for his wife, Pattie Boyd. Fate stepped in and George’s best bud Eric Clapton fell in love with Pattie. Eric was so crazy about Pattie that just one year later in 1970 he wrote his own song dedicated to George’s wife. That song which I hinted at in clue #4 was “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes, Eric’s group at the time. It must have been hell for poor Pattie having two handsome, sexy, talented guys so madly in love with her! She resisted for as long as she could but eventually Pattie left George and married Eric. George took it all in stride like the gentleman he was, saying “it happens” or words to that effect. He and Eric remained best friends until George died in 2001 and the rest is history …. or her story. 😉

Oh, I almost forgot. The most covered song of all time is another tune by The Beatles; it’s a little ditty you may have heard once or twice called “Yesterday”. There was also a movie with an intriguing premise called “Yesterday”, released in 2019 and chock full of Beatles tunes.

Thanks for spending some time playing Name That Tune. Hope you had fun today with me and The Lads!

See you on the flip side.

  1. Got it on clue 4, and that was before my second cup of coffee (with a splash of milk, yes, please, and thank you). Morning, sis!! I feel as chipper as that blooming grey squirrel in the hazel tree, stealing our nuts and snapping off branches.

    1. Chip, chip, chippee! 🐿️
Morning, sis! I had no doubt you’d get this one, even before your second cuppa!
Those furry little rascals are an endless source of entertainment … except when they’re gobbling up all the birdseed! Then they’re just damn rodents! 🤣

  2. I would love to see the video of that first dance of you and Mr Bill!

( benefits of paying attention while in class😄)

I would like to hear your thoughts about something – at the video’s comments section, there is one that has 12,000 upvotes :
“The video is actually pretty sad when you come to realise that at the point of filming this, the Beatles had grown so far apart that they decided to film their own parts at their own homes rather than come together and record it as a group. the video was also shot when McCartney fell into deep depression over realising that the Beatles were over…”

    Happy Labor Day, Nancy.

    1. I’d love to see that video, too! The year was 1972; Fred Flintstone was carving our dance on the wall of his cave 🤣

My thoughts? Like a knife in my heart. What saddens me most is the breakdown of their union, not the breakup of the group; that was inevitable. It felt like the ugliest divorce, this dissolution of our beloved Beatles. It was, of course, the only avenue left open to them. Now here we are, half a century later, still listening to their music, singing their songs, writing about them and talking about how much we love The Beatles! Their impact on the world is monumental. I’d say in the scheme of things, that is what matters most and for me, that’s quite Something. 🖤

      Mille grazie e buongiorno, caro!

  3. 😳😊🤣
Now, in my defence, let me begin with a short explanation. A while ago, Nancy, you mentioned that you include clues everywhere, so this week, I paid particularly close attention to detail. Yes, I missed the ‘Rock’ tag, but that’s easily done.
Your first word spoke to me: Time. This took me (you know how my mind works) to that popular first dance song by The 5th Dimension, Aquarius. It was released in 1969, so I wasn’t far out. Realising that it would never be my first thought, I then found myself thinking That’s Amore by Dean Martin. Alas, as this was released in 1953, I was wrong again.
When I played the video, parts of the song seemed familiar to me, but not all of it, which is odd for me for a Beatles song (although, before anyone else says it, not that odd!)
I’m sure hundreds of newly weds have danced to Aquarius over the years, and for that reason alone, I give myself one point. My grand score is still a minus figure, so we’ll just skip over that bit.
    There’s always next week, isn’t there? 🤣

    1. Morning, Tom. I see you’re wearing your thinking cap again today. You might want to check the fit; It might be a tad tight. 😂
Truth be told, I didn’t think anyone spent much time reading anything other than the clues; apparently, I was wrong about that since you focused on the very first word of my post – ‘time’ – and ran with it. 🏃🏼 Naturally, that led you to “Aquarius” which, as you cleverly pointed out, was a popular newlywed’s first dance. 😳 I’m quite certain I have never danced to the song “Aquarius” even when not under the influence of some mind-altering substance. 😵‍💫 But to each his own. 🕺🏻
You then found yourself in Little Italy with Dean Martin singing “That’s Amore”, which, following the strangest path of serendipity, was the Mother/Son dance I boogied to with my son David at his wedding! 🤗 Small world! I’m not quite sure how you got to Dean Martin via the 5th Dimension but it was a fun sidetrip. “That’s Amore” is a great song and I’m glad you mentioned it.
You talked about the tags and the use of the word “rock”; again, kudos to you for actually reading the tags and “thanks” to Pete for encouraging us to use the proper tags and categories. Woot! Woot! There’s a tag reader in the house!! 🤓
During your thought processing, did you happen to notice the word “something” was italicized twice within the clues? Well, how about that! “Something” just so happens to be the name of the song! Hot damn, talk about coincidence! 😆
Once again, I am swept away by your extremely entertaining and in-depth explanations; I’d love to be a fly on the wall in your house as you delve into the dissection of my clues. You are an endless source of joy to me, Tom. 🥳 Fortunately for me (and you), there’s always another week! 📆
PS: It’s Hot Seat Time: How would YOU like to take over the reins at Name That Tune some time? I, for one, would love to see what type of music you relate to and read what you come up with! 🤩 I’m sure you’d do a bang-up job! 🧨 Have your people call my people. ☎️
You’re tops in my book, Tom! 🥇 💛

      1. I thought it was the thinking cap, Nancy… turned out it was the night one!
I scour every word within these clues to ensure I don’t miss a thing…
That’s Amore was a nice surprise, which proves my link is there! 😏
I missed the italicised ‘Something’s, which proves my scouring isn’t very good. 😒 Although if I had noticed, it wouldn’t have helped because I didn’t know the name of the song. You could well have said ‘the song is called…’ and I wouldn’t have got it (although, if you had said that, I’d have thought it was a red herring.)
I would love to provide some clues for a future Name That Tune. But be warned… my musical tastes are somewhat erratic, eclectic, exotic and eh? I’m also sure my clue ones would give the game away.
Thanks for asking… my people will be in touch. 😁
