In The Groove

IN THE GROOVE (August 1, 2023)

Today I am featuring works from the solo career of the extremely prolific Paul McCartney.

I’d like to share with you two McCartney songs which really impressed me. The first one is called “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” which is done very much in the style of a jazzy Billy Joel. This is NOT the Gerry and the Pacemakers’ hit we all know and love. Written in 1946 by Joe Greene, this number is included on the 1990 LP by McCartney called “Tripping the Live Fantastic.

The second song is a piece entitled “Used To Be Bad” which harkens back to the sounds of The Steve Miller Band and ZZ Top (not surprising since it was co-written by McCartney and Miller). This one is a bluesy number which keeps going from start to finish and can be found on McCartney’s 1997 “Flaming Pie” LP. Upon its release, the time was ripe for McCartney to deliver an album steeped in Beatles lore and that’s exactly what he claimed “Flaming Pie” was all about.

For your listening enjoyment, here now is the one and only Macca with two very different-sounding pieces.

So, what’d you think of the ex-Beatle turned jazzy blues piano man?

The only question for today is which one of these songs you liked the best.

I hope you enjoyed hearing a little Macca today; in all honesty, I’m really not a fan of Paul’s solo work but I did like these two. I’m casting my vote for the funky blues sound of “Used to Be Bad”.

Please join me next week for another edition of In The Groove. Enjoy the rest of your week and all the upcoming music here on The Rhythm Section!

See you on the flip side.

  1. Like you, I’m a Beatles fanatic but not keen on Paul’s solo work. He lives 15 miles from me. I’ve met him a couple of times and he is a charming gentleman! As to my preferred song, you’ve probably noticed I’m waffling, as I have no idea which one to award my vote to!

    1. He’s overflowing with himself 🤣
No, I don’t think they sound samey. One’s very bluesy and the other’s jazzy. It’s the best of his post 1990 solo stuff which is cookie cutter crapola (an actual musical term 😂).
Sorry, Paul fans. I don’t care for the man.

    1. According to everything I’ve read, none of The Beatles had any kind musical training except for Paul and that only consisted of a couple of piano lessons. He hated them and quit soon after starting. Paul taught himself piano and guitar as a teenager; he was influenced by his father, a jazz musician, and by performers such as Little Richard and Buddy Holly.

    1. Hey, would you look at that! I liked the same one! 😂
Speaking of ZZ Top, in the early 70s, we drove from NY to Allentown PA to an outdoor arena for a Uriah Heep concert. It was the dog days of August, blistering sun. The warm up acts for Heep were Earth, Wind and Fire and … you guessed it … ZZ Top. What a show they put on and I’ve love them ever since!
      Morning, sis ❤︎

      1. And a very good morning to you, too. Those boys knew how to wear a beard!

Clothes drying on the line (fingers-crossed for no rain), and I’m recipe testing this afternoon. Time to mess up the kitchen.

              1. Now that I know it’s a negative image, I can see him. I’ve never known what that little hirsute creature was. I have a garden gnome that looks similar, but I doubt that was Nick’s goal. LOL!
