Not too long ago we got into the subject of the pros and cons of reality television. At that time I mentioned that I enjoyed watching American Idol when it first came out and now America’s Got Talent. Admitting that didn’t embarrass me at all; I have always been a fan of music talent shows and what bigger musical competition program is there than AGT?

This evening while checking out what was on my DVR I came across this. What a great example of reaching for the moon and realizing what had only been imagined.

I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did.

  4. Great fun. Superb clip, Nance. But your point is like using Mozart to then go on and claim that every person around in the Eighteenth century was a brilliant musician, which is plainly not the case,
    These talent shows are cheap tv and the vast majority of those taking part are instantly forgettable. And the tv cos want it that way because they attract viewers and therefore revenue. Schadenfreude.

    1. Yes, Pete, they use all the gimmicks to attract viewers and revenue… but so does the 8 pm news broadcast.

      I am a firm believer of the possibility to find gems even among what others call trash… kinda like I find my driftwood among piles of debris washed ashore.

      And one final note:
      One day, some years ago, someone came up to me and told me “Maybe everything you have been and done in your life led you to be here at this moment and change the life of this child” ( she was talking about a girl with autism I had been working with for three years).
      Now, that is a nice compliment… but I wasn’t that excited about it.
      Why? Because we are (in western culture) conditioned to think in terms of quantity, numbers: the more patients I treat, the better.
      But then I realized that changing even one human being’s life for the better is huge.

      In other words, if Lucy @ The Piano, or that teacher @ AGT were given a (possibility of) life altering chance through a tv product… yes, I will take it…every time.

    3. These contestants aren’t exactly lambs being led to the slaughter. They fully know the terms and try their luck on these shows without someone holding a gun to their head. Sure, the vast majority are forgettable; there are so many who audition. BUT have you ever heard of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Daughtry, Phil Phillips, Scottie McPherson, Reuben Studdard, etc.? These are just a few of the people who have gone on to become multi-million dollar stars as a result of America’s Got Schadenfreude!

  5. ” I won’t ask you to do something I wouldn’t do myself”… just imagine what a boost to his students’ confidence that appearance must have been.
    And he also checked out half of his bucket list 😀
