AN AUNT’S LAMENT

Our picture challenge – what do you see when you look at this photo.
This one was very difficult and painful for me to write.

Oh, my precious niece. Welcome to the family! I’ve waited so long to meet you and now you’re here.

I’ve longed to hold a little girl in my arms, to breath in that sweet baby smell.

You have two little cousins – my boys. They’re a bit older than you and they’ll protect you always, just as they would have protected their own sisters.

Yes, little one, I almost had baby girls, three in fact; it just wasn’t meant to be. The daughters I desperately wanted but never had. My body just couldn’t hold on to them.

They’re safe in heaven so don’t cry, my love; I cried enough to last a lifetime.

Now it’s time to say good night. Have no fear, sweet girl. I’ll always hold on to you.

  1. Besides our love of limericks, we have this in common. Three. Same number for me. We adopted two boys, brothers by birth, aged 6 and 12 at the time. I still believe some paths are already made, at least for me. I’m a grandmother now, and now there are babies everywhere.

    1. “Paths are already made.” I’ve always believed that. After my first experience, my doctor gave me such a beautiful analogy which brought me great peace. Bless you, Misky, for adopting older kids in need of loving parents. And now you have babies everywhere! Like you, I am a Grammy, too – 4 jewels aged 13, 11, 9 and almost 3. There’s a reason they’re called ‘grand’children. 🌹

      1. My parents warned us off adopting older children, and when we went against their advice, they wouldn’t talk to us for 3-years. But I’m a patient woman; I just waited it out. Yes, truly ‘everywhere’. My grandchildren are 14, 13, 4 and 3. The first two live in America, and the last two live in Bogotá. 🌎

          1. Covid kept us rooted in the UK for nearly three years, but generally we see each other once a year. The Bogotá clan (youngest son) were here this past July – the kids gave us Covid, so it wasn’t the best of visits. We’re spending this Christmas/New Year in America with eldest son and his family. The boys are absolutely superb at video calls at the weekend. Do your grandchildren live nearby?

    Amazing Name of site, “Elephant Trunk”.Means you have lots of knowledge storage capacity.

  8. I mow over the lawn of the old homestead area where 2 of what would have been Great uncles were put to rest under the big oaks which still stand. Tons of thoughts and stories which never happened over the years.
